Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation/Buffalo Rumblings to break down the Buffalo Bills’ wild win over the Houston Texans, grading every position group while examining what looked different under Joe Brady and Jim Leonhard.
The biggest story is Josh Allen and a noticeably more aggressive Bills offense. Allen earns an A+ after throwing for 334 yards, accounting for four touchdowns and consistently attacking Houston downfield. Patrick and Matt discuss why allowing Allen to play his aggressive, gunslinger style may occasionally produce dangerous throws—but also puts enormous stress on opposing defenses.
The guys go position-by-position through Buffalo’s performance. DJ Moore’s huge Bills debut, Khalil Shakir’s expanding role and Dalton Kincaid’s monster performance highlight an offense that suddenly looks loaded with different ways to attack defenses. Kincaid and the tight ends earn an A+ as Buffalo’s heavy use of two- and three-tight-end formations becomes one of the episode’s biggest tactical takeaways.
Defensively, Deone Walker, Ed Oliver and Greg Rousseau lead an impressive performance up front. Rousseau delivers two sacks and two forced fumbles, while Walker continues looking like a potential difference-maker in the middle.
There are considerably more concerns in the secondary. Patrick and Matt discuss Christian Benford’s uneven performance, the cornerback rotation and Buffalo’s struggles in dime packages. Patrick is especially critical of Damar Hamlin’s role as the dime safety and argues Buffalo needs to make a personnel adjustment before facing Detroit.
The episode wraps with an early look at Bills vs. Lions on Thursday Night Football. Detroit presents major problems with Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta, while Aidan Hutchinson gives Buffalo another elite pass rusher to handle. With questions surrounding both defenses, Patrick and Matt see legitimate potential for another high-scoring Bills shootout.
Key Takeaways
- Josh Allen looks unleashed. Buffalo attacked much farther downfield than it routinely did last season, and Patrick and Matt believe the aggressive mentality could be a defining feature of the Joe Brady offense.
- Dalton Kincaid and the tight ends could be enormous in 2026. Buffalo leaned heavily into 12 and 13 personnel, with Kincaid producing 130 receiving yards and the tight end room earning an A+.
- Buffalo’s defensive front delivered. Deone Walker, Ed Oliver and Greg Rousseau supplied disruptive plays and pressure, although the heavy snap counts for Buffalo’s top defensive linemen and edge rushers could become an issue.
- The secondary remains the biggest concern. Buffalo surrendered too many chunk plays and third-down conversions, with the dime package—and specifically Hamlin’s role in it—coming under heavy criticism.
- Bills-Lions has shootout potential. Detroit possesses explosive offensive weapons, while its defensive vulnerabilities could give Allen and Buffalo another opportunity for a huge offensive night.
